What is Ayurveda and what does it mean to me?

Ayurveda is an ancient form of traditional medicine from India where all other healing systems derived from (Western, Chinese, etc.) Also the world’s oldest holistic healing systems.

The word “Ayurveda” is sanskrit for “life-knowledge” or “knowledge of life” which is why the whole system is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on the balance between the mind, body and spirit.

This holistic healing system is a personalized approach to your health and wellness. Each person has their own dosha that will categorize you into your unique mind-body type.

What is a Dosha? How do I find mine?

Doshas are based on the natural elements found here on earth - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether/Space. This might be difficult to understand, but just like here on Earth, these elements also exist within us and our bodies. For example, the element of earth is grounding while fire is hot and mighty. Do any of these qualities live within you?

The 5 Elements make up the 3 Doshas:

Vata (Air/Ether)

Pitta (Fire/Water)

Kapha (Water/Earth)

What are some Ayurvedic practices I can start with today?

  • Herbal Teas - Coffee dehydrates our bodies while herbal teas rejuvenate and refuel our bodies

  • Oil Pulling - Swishing coconut oil and water in your mouth for 10-20 min. In the morning right after waking up to remove toxins from the body. This also aids in whitening teeth

  • Dry Brushing - This should be done before a shower, but can be done whenever to remove dead skin cells. Should be done moving upward towards the heart center

  • Self-Oil Massage - This can be done following your shower and dry brushing to massage the skin and stimulate the lymphatic system

  • Tongue Scraping - Done with a copper scraper to remove toxins from the mouth and body
